Projeto Feedbacks (CAPES-Print) Summer School Introduction based on a case –study: Monitoring pollution in the coastal environment: experience(s) from a 40-yr monitoring program. What are the costs, benefits of such a program, both for society and for the scientists? The implementation of a set state of the art biogeochemical techniques (traditional and non-traditional stable isotopes) within the framework of an environmental monitoring program. Can we use it to better track the sources, sinks, and fates of environmental pollutants using novel analytical tools? French and European-mandated environmental monitoring strategies: what do they do well, and why is their implementation what it is? Regulations and directives: what are they based upon, what are their goals and what do they actually achieve? Participants will then be involved in a practicum: construct and propose to set up a monitoring program for some of the bays from Rio, given a set of constraints: environmental, human, financial, and practical. Fieldwork involving students, at the impacted coastal bays of Rio de Janeiro (Guanabara and Sepetiba Bay). During this field trip, the students will examine how the recommendations issued would fare in a series of sites in the bays. The second part of the field trip will be spent on understanding how a sampling plan can affect the outcome of lab work for a model contaminant: examine and objective the lateral and temporal variabilities, homogeneity of the substrates, among others.
