EMENTA
Marginal and coastal environments, situated between the shoreline and the continental slope, represent only 8% of the earth's surface but provide 25% of global productivity and 90% of fishing takes place in exclusive economic zones (200 miles). These environments are the most impacted by anthropogenic activities as coastal urbanization (2/3 of world cities are located on the coast), pollution in different forms, global climate change and obviously sea level variations. In these areas, the interactions between ocean dynamics and sediments are the strongest, conditioning many processes that control these environments, their geomorphology, their geochemistry, their biogeochemical cycles, their production. For these reasons, understanding the sedimentary dynamics of these environments is primordial for their studies, protection and management in order to ensure their sustainability. A historical, geological and paleoenvironmental perspective is also necessary to understand the evolution of the coastal environments. The discipline proposes definitions of the coastal zone from different geological, ecological, sociological and economic perspectives. A description of the physical processes, the siliclastic sedimentary dynamics of the slope and continental shelf, the geochemistry of deoxygenation processes in sedimentary platforms, the sedimentary and geochemical processes of carbonated platforms, the coastal dynamics of beaches and mangroves, the impacts of anthropogenic climate change and sea-level rise.
